The University Clinic of Infectious Diseases was established in 1948, with Prof. Univ. Dr. Vladimir Buşilă being the founder of the Timișoara school of infectious pathology alongside Prof. Univ. Dr. M. Dragomirescu, Prof. Univ. Dr. Oliver Pop, Dr. Laurenţiu Cucuruz, Dr. Romiţă Alexandrescu, and Dr. Elena Venturini. Relevant studies were conducted on respiratory and metabolic functional disorders in pertussis, tetanus, endotoxic shock, and the field of intensive therapy in critical infectious diseases patients.
In 1973, on September 1st, the University Clinic of Infectious Diseases II was founded, successively coordinated by Prof. Univ. Dr. Iulian Vasilescu (1973-1979), senior lecturer Dr. Rudolf Popian (1979-1984), senior lecturer Dr. Ioana Crişan (1984-1986), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emil Novac (1986-1992), Prof. Univ. Dr. Doina Stănescu (1992-2008) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alexandru Crişan from 2008-2019, and Prof. Univ. Dr. Lăzureanu Elena Voichiţa from 2019-present.
Within the University Clinic of Infectious Diseases II, educational activities are conducted for sixth-year students of General Medicine, sixth-year students of General Medicine with English as the language of instruction, sixth-year students of General Medicine with French as the language of instruction, fourth-year Dental Medicine students, fourth-year Dental Medicine students with English as the language of instruction, third-year Nutrition and Dietetics students, second-year General Medical Assistance students, second and third-year Dental Prophylaxis Assistance students, second-year Dental Technology students, first-year Balneophysiotherapy and Recovery students, and fifth-year Immunopathology students. Additionally, residents in the specialties of infectious diseases, pediatrics, neonatology, family medicine, internal medicine, pulmonology, and epidemiology are trained.
The clinic has produced numerous well-regarded thesis works. Research activities with original content were focused on several priority areas for the discipline’s team: tetanus, trichinellosis, streptococcal infections, the pathogenesis and therapy of severe forms of hepatitis as well as the study of HIV/AIDS infection in children and adults, immunomodulatory therapy in infectious diseases, and SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Over the years, several specialist doctor and primary doctor examinations were held, with the clinic’s team being co-opted into these examination committees. Clinic members have participated in prestigious national and international scientific events with valuable contributions.
Methodological guidance activities have been realized through the management of severe cases from Arad, Caraş Severin, Hunedoara counties, organizing consultations with exchange of experience value, and participation in various scientific events organized in the territory.
