Starting with the 1992/1993 academic year, a new discipline, Anesthesia and Sedation in Dentistry, was introduced in the third-year curriculum of the Faculty of Dentistry, according to the Romanian and European curricular standards. Since the 1999/2000 academic year, a new discipline has been established, Dentoalveolar Surgery. Currently, the Discipline of Anesthesia and Sedation in Dentistry is included in the curriculum of the third year, and Dentoalveolar Surgery in the fourth year.
The aim of the Anesthesia and Sedation in Dentistry discipline is to explain the pathophysiological mechanisms of the pain, the pharmacological characteristics of local anesthetics and the correlation with their mode of action. Also the loco-regional anesthesia methods and procedures are explained. Emphasis is placed on the importance of adapting the type and technique of anesthesia to the patient’s biological profile to prevent accidents and complications.
Also in the third year, at the Dental Prophylaxis Assistant study program, the Anesthesia in Dental Medicine course emphasizes the defining roles of the dental prophylaxis assistant in the administration of loco-regional anesthesia in the dental office.
The course of dentoalveolar surgery for fourth year students presents, on the basis of a rich case studies, the types of oral surgery interventions. In essence, the combination of theory and practice sustain the formation and development of specific oral surgical skills, so that dentists can optimally solve the problems encountered in the current activity.
The disciplines carry out their activity within the Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery Clinic, section of the Timişoara County Emergency Hospital. The clinic is intended for dentoalveolar surgery, being rehabilitated, modernized and equipped according to European standards, through the Regio Vest operational program.
The equipment of the discipline for the practice of students of the III and IV years is constantly being modernized, the latest purchases being represented by phantom simulators, anesthesia simulator with sensors, anesthesia kits without a needle, FUTUDENT camera for recording therapeutic procedures.
The teachers of the discipline perform their clinical integration in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department, a profitable aspect for the good development of the teaching process. Within the disciplines, the activity of theoretical and practical training of resident doctors is carried out, as well as postgraduate training of dentists. Starting from the year 2024, Mr. University Professor Doctor Mircea Riviș coordinates the young doctoral students with research topics in the field of anesthesiology in dental medicine and in the field of dento-alveolar surgery.
The discipline members carries out an intense research activity that materializes through the publication of ISI, BDI articles, participation in national and international congresses and scientific events.
The discipline was led at the beginning by Professor Dr. Ilie Vasiluță, then by Associated Professor Dr. Emilia Ianeș, and from 2019 by Professor Dr. Mircea Riviș.
