Pediatric dentistry is the field of dentistry that ensures the oral health of children and adolescents, including those with special needs, through preventive and curative means.
The interest in better oral health for children began in the 19th century, but modern pediatric dentistry was born in 1902 when Ernst Jessen opened the first European dental clinic for children in Strasbourg. Although there have been enormous changes in health systems since World War II, real changes in child dental care have only occurred with the advent of WHO guidelines for the implementation of preventive programs.
In our country, the first Pediatric Dentistry departments were based in the Universitary Centers of Bucharest and Cluj, with Iaşi, Târgu-Mureş and Timişoara Universitary Centers joining the list soon afer. Between 1963 and 1964, the Pedodontics-Orthodontics discipline was established in Timişoara, and in 2014 the Pediatric Dentistry discipline became independent. The headquarters of the discipline is located on the first floor of the Faculty of Dentistry from Bv. Revoluției din 1989 no.9, Timişoara.
Within the Pediatric Dentistry discipline, the students of the Dental Medicine specialization from IVth and Vth years of the Romanian and English sections, of the Dental Hygiene specialization from the first year, and of the Dental Technique specialization from the second year, carry out their training activity in Pediatric Dentistry. The Pediatric Dentistry discipline also includes optional subjects: “Principles of Interdisciplinary Treatment” for VIth year students, as well as facultative: “Myofunctional Orofacial Disorders” for the Vth year students of the Dental Medicine specialization.
The academic staff of the discipline are dentistry specialists or primary care physicians, in the specialities of pediatric dentistry, as well as orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics. Constant professional education is ensured through active participation in national and international courses and conferences.
Since 2017, with the establishment of the new specialty of Pediatric Dentistry within the residency programme, the discipline’s academic staff also coordinate the training of resident doctors in this specialty.

Currently, the Pediatric Dentistry discipline of the Faculty of Dentistry of UMFVBT carries out research activities within the Pediatric Dentistry Research Center (Pedo-Research).
