General presentation

Department VII Internal Medicine II of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Victor Babeș” of Timișoara is comprised of five fundamental University Clinics, essential for the theoretical and practical preparation of General Medicine students. These University Clinics are:

  • University Cardiology Clinic I
  • University Diabetes, Nutrition, Metabolic Diseases and Systemic Rheumatology Clinic
  • University Endocrinology Clinic
  • University Gastroenterology Clinic
  • University Nephrology Clinic

The human resource of the Department VII Internal Medicine II consists of 65 teachers who support both teaching and research activities.

Each of these University Clinics represent a fundamental pillar of medical education, providing students with a profound understanding of internal medicine pathologies, which are indispensable in the process of becoming a competent physician. Thus, students

acquire essential knowledge for the diagnosis and treatment of common conditions in medical practice, providing a solid foundation for their professional careers.

Subject descriptions:

  • The University Cardiology Clinic I focuses on the study of cardiovascular pathologies, considering their prevalence both in Romania and on a global scale. The courses are updated according to the latest international guidelines, providing students with a solid preparation in diagnosing and treating cardiac disorders.
  • The University Diabetes, Nutrition, Metabolic Diseases and Systemic Rheumatology Clinic focuses on the understanding and management of major metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, obesity and other associated conditions. It provides students with theoretical and practical preparation in managing cardiovascular risk factors, with an emphasis on prevention and up-to-date treatments.
  • The University Endocrinology Clinic aims to study endocrine diseases, which are often under-diagnosed but significantly impact patients’ health. The educational program includes in-depth studies of the pathologies of the endocrine glands and specific diagnostic and treatment methods.
  • The University Gastroenterology Clinic deals with the pathology of the digestive system, including liver diseases, an ever evolving field. The courses cover the latest discoveries and advancements in gastroenterologic treatments, preparing students for the diagnosis and management of these diseases.
  • The University Nephrology Clinic offers a comprehensive preparation in urinary tract diseases, including acute and chronic renal pathologies. It provides students with modern strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of renal diseases, a core area in internal medicine.

Research and interdisciplinary collaboration: Research activity in Department VII Internal Medicine II is characterized by an integrative and interdisciplinary approach. Members of the department collaborate closely with specialists from other departments of the university, thus contributing to the development of innovative solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases. These interdisciplinary collaborations are essential for promoting high quality research and continuously improving healthcare standards.

Center for Molecular Research in Nephrology and Vascular Pathology (MOL-NEPHRO-VASC): the Center for Molecular Research in Nephrology and Vascular Pathology (MOL-NEPHRO-VASC) was established in 2021 (Contract no. 5439-3/5.03.2021), as a result of the internal competition for the establishment of research centers within the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Victor Babeș” of Timișoara. It is classified as an Advanced Research Center, ranking 3rd of 10, with a score of 167.01 points.

The research center includes full members and associate members (PhD students) from the four constituent disciplines: Nephrology, Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases, Endocrinology and Cardiology. In addition, the center includes internal collaborators from

within UMFTVB, from subjects such as Pharmacology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Pathophysiology, Biochemistry, Neurology and Public Health.

External collaborations are paramount to the success of this center, including partnerships with universities and research institutes in Timișoara, such as the National Research and Development Institute for Electrochemistry and Condensed Matter and the Faculty of Physics of the West University of Timișoara. The center also collaborates with national institutions such as the “Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad (Department of Technical and Natural Sciences), the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca (Department of Food Chemistry and Biochemistry) and the Center for Research and Development in Biotechnologies Applied in Diagnostics and Molecular Therapies – CCD BIODIATECH-Proplanta SRL, Cluj-Napoca. In addition, the center includes internal collaborators from within UMFTVB, from subjects such as Pharmacology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Pathophysiology, Biochemistry, Neurology and Public Health.
