General presentation

The III Department of Orthopedics–Traumatology is a part of the XV Department of Orthopedics-Traumatology, Urology and Medical Imaging of the Faculty of Medicine. It is coordinated by Prof. Romulus Fabian Tatu, M.D., Ph. D., senior specialist in orthopedics-traumatology and includes the following members: Assistant lecturer Cătălin-Adrian Miu, M. D., Ph. D., specialist in orthopedics-traumatology, and Assistant lecturer Mihai Hurmuz, M. D., Ph. D., specialist in orthopedics-traumatology. The Department functions within the “Dr. Victor Popescu” Emergency Military Clinical Hospital, Timisoara, as the Clinical Orthopedics-Traumatology Ward.

The Department specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prophylactic orthopedic and traumatic pathology of the locomotor system. It focuses mainly on sports trauma and its significant particulars as far as treatment and functional recuperation are concerned, both carried out in our own physical therapy unit. The Department also specializes in articular degenerative pathology, being included in the National Endoprosthetic Program, commonly performing primary and revision hip, knee and shoulder replacements.

Arthroscopic surgery plays an important role in the treatment of joint pathology, and the Department regularly performs knee, shoulder, ankle and elbow arthroscopy.

Starting with 2013, the Department has been accredited to perform heterologous osteotendinous transplants, constantly cooperating with the Tissue Bank of the Colentina Hospital, Bucharest.

The Department also deals with the tumoral pathology of the locomotor system, performing surgery with modular endoprostheses, together with various types of bone substitutes, as well as bone transplants.

All our medical activity is reflected in numerous scientific articles, books, participations in national and international congresses, and is used as the scientific basis in mentoring and coordinating graduation and doctoral theses.

The III Department of Orthopedics-Traumatology annually organizes post-graduate courses addressed to residents, specialists and senior physicians, focusing on up-to-date topics, mainly related to arthroplasty and arthroscopy. At the same time, the Department is a formation center for orthopedic and trauma residents, and Prof. Romulus Fabian Tatu, M. D., Ph. D., is a residency coordinator in orthopedic and trauma surgery.

The entire staff of the III Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology is continually aiming at improving the quality of the academic process, their efforts resulting in a number of text books and practical work guides. The students carry out their activities in a state-of-the-art auditorium endowed with audio-video systems, in the hospital wards, in physical therapy rooms, in our outpatient unit and in the operating theater. The operating rooms are connected to a closed-circuit audio-video system which allows students to watch each stage of a surgery in real time and to interact by communicating with the surgical team. During the pandemic, all clinical internships took place via direct, interactive audio-video transmissions from the operating room.
