Center for Modeling Biological Systems and Data Analysis (CMSBAD)

Comprising medical doctors, informatics experts, and physicists, CMSBAD is an interdisciplinary research center interested in the mathematical modeling of biological phenomena and statistical analysis of medical data. CMSBAD conducts scientific projects in the field of tissue engineering, human body composition analysis by physical methods, sonic representation of medical data, and inter-disciplinary analysis of bio-medical data.

Various bioprinting techniques are applied to build multicellular structures (such as tissue constructs that mimic the tumor microenvironment, or vascular structures) and computational models are developed to study cellular self-organization in tissue constructs assembled in the laboratory.

Body composition studies rely on: (i) air displacement plethysmography ‒ to assess global adiposity; (ii) ultrasound ‒ to measure thicknesses of fat and muscle layers; (iii) bioelectrical impedance analysis ‒ to evaluate the water content of the body as well as visceral adiposity; (iv) three-dimensional (3D) body scanning ‒ to conduct digital anthropometry and posture analysis.

Sonification studies refer to: (i) representation of medical data by sounds (biological signals, such as ECG, pulse wave, O2 saturation, or exercise tests; and biological sequences, such as DNA or protein sequences); (ii) developing algorithms and software for sonification, including their validation.

CMSBAD is open to collaborations in all domains of biomedical science in which its human and material resources might contribute to the understanding of biological phenomena and/or to the improvement of health care.
