NEW TRENDS IN PRECLINICAL RESEARCH
13-15 DECEMBER, TIMISOARA, ROMANIA
Between December 13-15, 2023, the first edition of the „New trends in preclinical research” workshop with international participation, organized by the Council for Doctoral University Studies, will take place at the „Victor Babes” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timisoara. The event will bring together lecturers and specialists from the area of research-development-innovation in the field of health and will have two main parts focused on in vitro and in vivo preclinical testing. Furthermore, a series of presentations and discussions sessions related to new type compounds with biological activity (synthesis, characterization, evaluation) are provided.
Part I – In vitro testing models
Presentation of the alternative testing models – Miroslav Kandar, MatTek Life Sciences A BICO COMPANY
Hands-on training: Skin irritation test OECD TG 439 – Marek Puskar, MatTek Life Sciences A BICO COMPANY
MatTek is one of the world leaders in reliable in vitro human tissue model innovation. Their skin, ocular, oral, respiratory, and intestinal tissue models are used to assess safety and efficacy throughout the cosmetics, chemical, pharmaceutical, and household product industries. These advanced tissue models empower companies to achieve their goals of non-animal testing while lowering testing costs and providing human-relevant results.
MatTek expanded to a full life science company with the addition of MatTek Dishes, Primary Human Cells & Media, 3Diy Kits, and testing services for clients seeking in vitro solutions. Their expertise in cell isolation and expansion allowed the development of the highest quality primary human cells and culture media for research in 2D. 3Diy kits further bridge the gap between 2D cell culture and ready-to-use 3D tissues by providing researchers with an opportunity to use specialized cells in 3D tissue models at a lower cost.
Part II – In vivo studies
Know Your Mouse?
Refined Mouse Biomethodology – A discussion about ethics, legislation and basic handling and administration procedures for the laboratory mouse, Argyro Zacharioudaki DVM MLAS Dipl ECLAM, BIOEMTECH Laboratories, Athens, Greece
Mouse Anatomy and Sample collection – A review of laboratory mouse anatomy and summary of considerations for sample collection, Anastasia Tsingotjidou, DVM PhD, Associate Professor, School of Veterinary Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
Official FELASA Severity Workshop
Classification and reporting of severity of procedures – Rodent Models (Mouse and Rat)
Instructor: Argyro Zacharioudaki, DVM MLAS DiplECLAM, Designated Veterinarian & In-vivo research consultant, BIOEMTECH CRO Laboratories, Athens, Greece
Facilitator: Anastasia Tsingotjidou, PhD, Associate Professor in Anatomy, Histology and Embryology School of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
This workshop presents the details of severity classification of procedures, according to Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. All procedures are assigned a severity classification in advance, during the authorization process (prospective severity classification) and in the non-technical project summary (predictive severity classification), to evaluate the application of refinement and keep the level of severity of procedures the lowest possible. Furthermore, the severity experienced by each individual animal must be reported in the annual statistical reports of each Member State (actual severity classification). Actual severity is a determining factor on the re-use of animals in further procedures and aids in determining the retrospective severity classification, to be assigned at the end of a project.
Coherence in assigning actual severity classifications across Member States is very important to offer opportunities to implement the principle of 3Rs, aimed at improving animal welfare, to ensure harmonization in statistical reporting and help improve communication with the public. The FELASA Severity Workshop, with the encouragement of the European Commission, is delivered in a standardized format since the FELASA 2016 Congress, using examples published by the 2010 FELASA/ESLAV/ECLAM Working Group.
