Public Health and Management

The discipline of Public Health was established in 1952. At first, it was called Biostatistics until 1954, then Health Organization until 1961, and Public Health until 1967. From 1967 until 2000, it works under the name of Social Medicine. The discipline is subsequently named Public Health and Health Management, starting with 2000-2001.

Following the changes in the curricula, the subject is currently taught in the sixth year of General Medicine (Romanian, English, and French), and from the academic year 2020-2021 to the fourth year in the Faculty in Nursing (Registered nurses). From 2011 to 2012, the course is also taught at the College of Nutrition and Dietetics in the third year.

The scientific research activity addressed various public health issues: demographic issues, morbidity, and mortality from widespread chronic diseases, risky behaviors among adolescents, the organization and operation of health facilities, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, etc.

The History of Medicine discipline was established in 1954. The History of Medicine course has been taught in the English section since the 1998-1999 academic year and the French section since 2011-2012. Since the 2010-2011 academic year, the discipline is optional and is taught in the first year of General Medicine.

The aim is to get students to know the evolution of medical concepts over time and the contribution of some medical personalities to the development of universal and Romanian medicine.

In the history of medicine, scientific research has addressed issues of folk medicine in Banat and the work of some medical figures in this region.

In the last two decades, the didactic activity has diversified through the appearance of postgraduate education for resident doctors in the specialty of Public Health and Health Management and through the organization of continuing medical education courses in the field of health management. From the academic year 2008 to 2009, the first Master’s degree within UMF Victor Babeş Timişoara is organized: Management of Social and Health Services with a duration of one year.

From the academic year 2018-2019 in the Faculty of Nursing (Registered nurses), the third year, we started teaching the subject of Health Promotion and Health Education. In the same year, the discipline is also taught at the College of Nursing for Balneo-physiotherapy and Recuperation in the second year. Also, in the Faculty of General Health Care, in the second year, starting from 2018-2019, the discipline of Legal aspects of the profession; Health and social legislation, is taught.

Since 2006, the discipline has organized training programs to obtain the “Management of Health Services” certificate. The training modules are coordinated by the National School of Public Health, Management, and Professional Development in Bucharest. The program is addressed to doctors and pharmacists confirmed in the degree of specialist or consultant to obtain certificates by doctors, dentists, and pharmacists.
